Our Vision

A Vision for Spiritual Growth

My Journey Toward Spiritual Growth…

When I became a Christian, 12 or 13 years ago, I wanted to experience genuine spiritual growth. So I read my Bible. And I prayed. And I went to church. And all of those things were invaluable. But I wanted more. The Christian faith is so rich and has such depth. I wanted to experience all that I could and what I was getting from my local congregation simply wasn’t enough.

So I began reading other books alongside my Bible. I read Andrew Murray and learned about prayer and leading a life of devotion. Then I read Thomas a Kempis and learned the value of humility and submission to God’s will. After that, I read John Wesley and learned about living a life of holy love. And I read Richard Foster and discovered the beauty and power of the spiritual disciplines. As I read, each author introduced me to other authors, streams of Christianity, and ways of looking at my faith.

The Christian faith is like an endless cavern that we’ll never fully plumb the depths of. But that shouldn’t keep us from trying.

The Vision of ‘Thoughts from Canaan’

So what’s the point of this blog?

Before I became a pastor, I knew what it felt like to want to grow but have to do it all on my own. Now, I realize that I’m not alone. I believe that many Christians want to experience spiritual growth but they aren’t sure where to start. There’s just so much to learn! And at times much of it can be confusing or even frustrating (have you ever tried to read the book of Numbers?).

But I don’t believe it has to be.

Thoughts from Canaan exists to equip you for the Christian journey – by helping you grow in knowledge and grace.

Nothing can replace Bible reading, prayer, or meeting together locally with other believers. But I believe that those things can be supplemented with resources that will help you in your Christian walk.

If you’d like to find out more about what I mean, you can download A Disciple’s Manifesto and learn more about my vision for Christian growth.

May God richly bless you as you walk the road he’s laid before you.
