“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

-Acts 2:42

The early church of Acts was truly committed.  But how?  And how can we commit ourselves in the same ways that these early Christians did?  In Acts 2:42, we are given a list of things that these Christians were “devoted” to.

First of all they devoted themselves to the “apostles’ teaching”.  Today, we don’t have any apostles to lead us as this young church did.  Instead, God has preserved his glorious Word for us and has promised us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  We can access God’s teachings at any time by merely looking to the Bible.  Also, we can learn even more by going to church and having a minister of God’s Word teach us.

Second, these early Christians devoted themselves to fellowship.  They were constantly surrounding themselves with other members of Christ’s body. “In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:5)  When we cut ourselves off from other members of Christ’s body we are essentially starving ourselves of this blessed gift that God has bestowed on us.  We have many family members. If we never fellowship then how can we ever learn to pray together? (Acts 1:14) Or confess our sins to one another? (James 5:19) Or be one in heart and mind? (Acts 4:32)  Fellowship is essential.

These early Christians were also devoting themselves to the breaking of bread.  They were constantly remembering Christ’s suffering and sacrifice through communion.

And finally, they were devoting themselves to prayer.  We learn in Acts 1:14 that they “all joined together constantly in prayer.”  How often do we have prayer meetings?  How often do we have a time set out where we can just pray with other believers?  We need a time like this.  Let’s devote ourselves to God’s Word, fellowship, remembering Christ and praying.  Let’s be the church that God wants us to be.
