“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

–Genesis 1:1

We’ve probably read or heard those words at least a hundred times in our lives.  And the more that we hear them, the more commonplace they become.  It’s as if the edge on the Word of God is slowly growing more and more dull until it doesn’t even penetrate the heart anymore.

We need to take a step back and really meditate on everything that emanates from that phrase.  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  For instance, in the beginning?  What is the beginning anyways?  And what was before the beginning?  Was God doing something?  Did he think long about creating us?  What is long to God?  So many questions and yet we’ve been asked to simply “believe”.  When Thomas doubted that Jesus had risen physically from the dead, Jesus responded “Stop doubting and believe!”  (John 20:27)  As if it would be ignorant to think any other way!  And it is!  Yet, we often find ourselves doubting still.  God is asking us to merely take him at his Word.

Stop thinking that just because you’ve never seen it or experienced it, it can’t be so.  God is far bigger than your experiences, or mine.  Take God’s word like you would a steak.  Look at each verse and savor it.  Think about how absolutely overwhelming each and every word is.  If God promises you peace (which he does, see Psalm 29:11), then quit trying to analyze what kind of peace it is and when it will come, etc.  If he tells you to quit worrying (which he does, see Matthew 6:5-34), then QUIT WORRYING!  And if you don’t believe that you can, then cry out like the man who said “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)  Let’s learn to trust God with everything that his Word says!
