Return of the King - Advent 2016

December 8, 2016 – Filling the Earth with His Glory

“Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel,
Who alone works wonders.
And blessed be His glorious name forever;
And may the whole earth be filled with His glory.
Amen, and Amen.”
– Psalm 72:18-19

One of the greatest temptations of the Christmas season is to make things about us. Though pride is always at the door, it seems to get especially bold during this time of year. And where there’s pride, problems are sure to follow. There’s a reason that the holidays are known for increased family stress and conflict.

But this isn’t at all how things were intended. Advent is about worshiping King Jesus. This is the reason that this Psalm is such a powerful Advent scripture. Our lives and everything they entail should be focused on giving glory to our King! We don’t exist for our own joy or pleasure. We exist to fill the whole earth with his glory!

I’ve been reflecting over the past several weeks on the fact that God has given us his Spirit. As believers, we carry God’s presence everywhere we go. We bring his glory with us when we sit down to eat at Wendy’s or when we check out at Wal-Mart. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we have become conduits of God’s love, mercy, and grace.

What a relief when we see this! Life isn’t about me. Whether I succeed or fail at this or that doesn’t ultimately matter. All that matters is being a conduit of God’s presence. All that matters is being one small piece in the world-wide puzzle of God’s love and glory. What a burden this removes from our backs!

This Christmas season, don’t fall into the temptation of making the season about you. It isn’t about you. It isn’t about presents. It isn’t about family get togethers or dinners or anything else we make it about. All of those things have their place but they aren’t the main thing. So if you buy something that someone decides to return, it’ll be okay. If you burn the turkey or screw up the dressing, God will still be on the throne. There’s more to Christmas than lights, snowmen, and Santa Claus.

This season is ultimately about filling the whole earth with God’s glory!

So let’s get started!
