“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.”
-Genesis 1:26-27

Let us make man in OUR image. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit decide to make men in their image. In the image of God. We could receive no higher honor than to bear the image of God in each of us. Yet, sin has marred that image. Leaving what once was a clear image nothing more than a shadow. And we all know the story of how God sent his son in order to return that image to each of us. Jesus died and rose again so that we could again display the image of God.

But what does it mean to be in the image of God? Is it our intelligence? Our emotions? Our culture perhaps? I doubt it, I believe that God’s image is equivalent to his spirit. For it was only in man that God, “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2:7). And the same word, spirit, also means breath. The animals did not receive the honor of having God breathe his spirit into them. Only man received this honor. Yet, man gave up the honor in order to take on a spirit of rebellion. However, four-thousand years after the giving of life to the first man, God again breathed into man a new spirit. This new spirit is the Holy Spirit which the first Christians received on the day of Pentecost.

God went to such great lengths in order to give us a new Spirit, what are we to do with it? Some are left confused as to what this new Spirit provides. It is a spirit that teaches (John 14:26). This Spirit leads us to peace, joy and RIGHTEOUSNESS (Romans 14:17)! The Holy Spirit makes us like Adam all over again. We are given the power to choose. After all, God has broken the chains of sin and made us alive (Ephesians 2:1-10)! We now have a Holy Spirit that works righteousness in us! God will make us holy. We need only to submit and have faith that he CAN!
